I will be leaving Singapore tomorrow morning and spend the next 5 days in Penang, Malaysia. Before I go, here's a recipe of a Chinese New Year pastry that I tried out few days ago.
Beancurd & Five Spices Pastry Twist Recipe
Ingredients:
75g tofu
250g plain flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
1 egg
100g caster sugar
2 tbs sesame
1 tbs cooking oil
Seasoning
1cm cube of red fermented bean curd 南乳
1 tsp five spice powder
1 tsp salt
Method:
1) Sieve plain flour and baking powder, set aside.
2) Mash the beancurd until finely paste and smooth, mix with seasoning and oil, then combine with flour, egg, sugar and sesame, knead until form a dough and smooth, let the dough rest for 1 hour.
3) Roll out or flatten the dough thinly, fold up and cut into 2.5 X 1-cm length strips, then make a small cut in the center with scissors, fold the edge one side into the center, pull up lightly to make a twist.
4) Deep fry the pastry into hot oil over mekium heat until crispy and golden in color, remove from heat, drain on kitchen paper and serve.
